It will be my 1st zine! The 1st exhibition I curated in YMCA was a Fanzine exhibition. However, it is my 1st time to design and make my zine. I really enjoyed the process although I was sick. It was my 2nd time to host this 'binding home factory' since my last 自發作 (DIY book) exhibition.

Looking forward to the Tooting zine fair tomorrow. Excited~ I hope someone will buy my zine too ^^

Face project

I haven't posted these 2 drawings here although I finished them in October. This is a Face project exercise I did in college. I have chosen 20 abjective words and illustrated them in the drawing the left, then I selected one of those, enlarged it and make the right drawing. This exercise surprised me cos' we decided to further develop these 2 rabbits in my coming final project which I have not expected.

We don't necessary to hardy work to reflect our local culture. What we normally do, eat, speak, wear, etc, reflect our cultural background. Although HK maybe too 'international', but we interpret our life language in HK way.

Visited Farmer's Market in Oval with Eva as soon as I received her text message. It was excellent to stop myself from work for a few hours and chatted with friend sitting near to the stalls. It was freezing cold, but I enjoyed sharing on our projects. I like this homemade coffee walnut cake. It was just simply carried by a simple paper bag and tissue paper. It has more human touch. Satisfied, and I worked until midnight again...

During the presentations, we were asked what the challenge was in this project. In this MA course, the most challenging task is writing the research essay, which I rarely do analysis and arts/cultural critique....Or, I have never done it. I kept changing and narrow my research topic before the contextual study tutorial. The topics have been 'Illustrations on ethical issues', 'Changing role of illustrations in Hong Kong', 'Role of illustrators in children's illustration books'...etc. The topic ideas came from my experience and what I am thinking of doing illustrations. However, we must narrow the topic to make the critique more specific and relevant to my projects.

My illustrations are always claimed to be cute. I was asked by an audience at my illustration talk in HK, 'Is Kawaii character becoming dominant in HK illustration industry?'. I did not give a brief answer in this Q&A section. But, I hope my coming essay will give him a good answer later. And this audience was my drawing teacher and former chairman of HKSI, KY Chan :)

Apart from analysis of cultural context, I hope it will be an opportunity for me to understand and evaluate my involvement in this 'movement'. Workhard and I hope I could provide a satisfactory answer.

She reminded us to believe our own instinct, no need to change our works to suit others' palate. We''ve present our real selves. 'Your target audiences are the ones who understand your works. If not, they are not your targets who buy your books.' Peter Suart told me at Hong Kong Arts Centre 4 years ago.

I usually work on these books: 1) The little diary, to record what to do; 2) Snoopy journal, is my reflective log to record my working process and evaluation..and life experience in London; 3) A4 project sketchbook, for project development and sketches. I will carry this to travel too; 4) Sketchbook in leisure, to draw something irrelevant to project. My college's name is debossed on its cover....Actually, there are more drawings on other specified papers. I collected them in another A3 fold, and it is extremely heavy now....I'd imagine the huge cost I ship them to Hong Kong later....

It snowed in London finally! I was excited and went out as early as I could this morning, because I needed to take photos of my rabbits and snow. So happy to chat with my sister on Skype (finally again..) afterward, we 'kakaka' and 'wakaka' for 2 hours. I hope I can back to HK soon and we'd chat again at cafe. Wakaka, kakakkaka...I made my room noisy in this happy Sunday :D

"CASS" is my favorite place in London, where I must spend money in each visit...There is wide range of arts materials and always on sale. And I spent 2 hours I here last time...

They are so attractive and part of them is not available in Hong Kong and they are much cheaper...Student day is coming and we will have chance to get a lot of free products (oil, gouache, cartridge pad, marker, vouchers, etc) :D

'Illustration Visual History' (by S. Heller & S. Chwast) is a very good book to understand illustration history, with its cultural style in particular period from 18th century, eg. Art Nouveau, Art Deco. We will understand the movement along with the changing of political and economic background.

The Gruffalo and its making of

Shout 'Gruffalo' loudly to Eva when I discovered 'The Gruffalo' at St. Martins's library. It was originally a children's illustration book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. I like this very much as the monster Gruffalo is so cute (and should be scary...which Axel never imagined his Gruffalo is the favorite of many families).

I was happy to watch its animation version as well as the making of. It is interesting to know how the illustrator, writer, director, animator, sound actors worked together. It reminded me the happy moment when I was working on the TVC with Yellow Page. Although most of my time I was working with the designer, I really enjoyed the meeting we had with the director and animators. Everyone had different roles and gave ideas from various angels. And...the most enjoyable moment must be chatting and eating with the art director and the account executive near office, although we needed to work after dinner in the midnight :)

New header

Happy New Chinese New Year and I'd like to give my blog a new look. I have been using the old donut header since July 2010. After I started my work in Shenzhen, I was looking for a new start and I created a 2nd blog for sharing. I gave the blog the name 'Whatever Smiles', as smile makes us happy. Happy to smile, smile to be happy. I enjoyed my happy donuts (the old header on the top), but it is too sugary for me now...so better change again~

I had no clear idea what to put on the new header. So, I drew every characters I designed yesterday night. May I introduce them to you here?

Me: 'Me' is the girl I drew on comics in Singtao Daily in 2008-2010 (Thanks Jan). Her hair is curved on one side. It is the same as mine when I was in primary school. Due to my heavy workload at company, I gave up the column, which has provided me the opportunity to draw comics to the public.
Olga: She is the main character in my DIY book 'Mind the Box' at Kongkee's workshop. Olga was looking for her box with dream and passion. I was really happy to exhibit and sell this little wooden book at a YMCArts in Education DIY bookfair (Thanks Kongkee, Sandy and Miranda Yiu, all encouraged me a lot to create. Olga and I are looking for the box together).
KaKa: She was created for a large scale X'mas decoration at Windsor House, 'Magical KaKa Factory'. I hope she'd bring happiness to the public with her magical desserts. Thanks for the frequent homemade desserts from my dearest friends, I hoped I'd make it with KaKa's magic to them as reward.
Nadia: She is the earliest character I created after my A-Level. No eye and no mouth, to observe the world with heart. She appeared on Swatch watches in 2011 and 2012.
Rabbit family: Their names may be Meca, Uni, Pudo and Peco. Meca and Uni developed from Nadia and they are love partners. Pudo and Peco are friends. I will be working on my MA final projects with them :)

Yes, I can't deny that they are very cute, maybe too cartoon and commercial, but they were all created with my sincerity and from my experience, to deliver positive message to the audience. And I will always insist with this belief with my illustrations :)

I hope I could be more hardworking to make everything perfect...I tried 2 drawings before working on the actual work to be exhibited in Chelsea in February. I don't like the final result...feel sad. I am pleased to discovered 'The Good Times" in Shoreditch in London. It is a free paper with all good news, actually it mentioned the problems in London but it suggested solutions to keep everyone optimistic. It is an alternative to miserable Metro. Apart from the content, I was inspired by its graphics layouts as well as the illustrations. Nice :)

Hong Kong Comics!!!

Excited to discover this book at my college library, as I am really interested to know more about the comic history in Hong Kong. As mentioned in my previous interviews, I was greatly influenced by the comics in Hong Kong, including 'Ngau Chai (牛仔)', 'Old Master Q (老夫子)', and McMug series. I really enjoy reading them, because I discovered the power of visual language, with very few dialogue from them. There are few books introducing HK comics, and I really hope there will be an archive on HK illustrations very soon.

Mum received a parcel from my dad in Japan when I was a kid. There were 4 kimonos for my mum, my sisters and me. Mine was orange in color, mum's was purple and my sisters' were red. It was difficult to wear this and we wore them once only...but my dad enjoyed taking photo of us.

I really like books as X'mas gifts. I worked in YMCA last X'mas. All of us wrote what we hoped to receive on paper, and exchanged the paper with secret colleague. I only wrote 'A book at Kubrick', and let my colleague to choose any. It will be more exciting to me to receive the gift and more time consuming (haha) to my colleague. And, I hope the colleague could go to Kubrick, and visited the bookfair which I helped to organize there as well :)

大家的聖誕祝福、街上的聖誕佈置和電視上鼓吹節日慶祝的廣告令我有意識到自己今年會在外地度過聖誕。今是不是第一次長居海外，但在香港以外過聖誕真是我的第一次。

自從2年前皇室堡“Magical KaKa Factory” 誕生之後，我期後每年便是靠KaKa為我計算我成為插畫師的大約年資。雖然之前還是地鐵、黃頁等projects，不過KaKa是我第一個大型project，可以讓自己的故事和插畫包裝整個有名氣的商場。雖然最後outcome較期望的商業味道濃了很多，但是我很珍惜是次創作我機會，真的要謝謝Kitty、Yvonne、Joey和其他在背後很努力的同事。

聖誕setup之前3個多月每天放工後做artwork、畫畫、跟大家Skype開會……每分鐘在電腦前面看著自己的畫和mockup。當看到商場上所有佈置完工之後我是沒有太大感覺的。我發現的只有出錯了的artwork、某些佈置被人移位或損壞了……然後我要準時出席記者訪問，及於在2星期內完成自己在商場的個人插畫展，一切我都麻木了。

最開心的是朋友放工到G127(展覽位置)探我時，一起到橫街買車仔麫和貢茶時，大家發現掛在皇室堡，印有KaKa甜品的許願卡被車仔麪店店員排到他們的汽水機上面，成為車仔麫店的裝飾。聖誕完結後，皇室堡的KaKa佈置亦給換掉。在屯門生活的朋友告訴我她在巴士上看見KaKa的大裝飾牌被放在雜貨店門口作裝飾。嘩!我看見他們對KaKa作品的反應，比我在商場看見更興奮。很高與你們為作品加上更多意義，因為創作不是純粹為個人以出發的。

在倫敦的一個lecture上面，學生分組討論。同組有來自Fine Art、Illustration和Designer Maker的同學。Fine Art同學不喜歡我和另一位Illustration同學。他說Illustrators只是為了錢而創作的人。他說Fine Art才是真正可以放棄錢，去改變大家思想行為的「偉人」。

我沒有跟「偉人」辯論，我只跟大家說不論大家做甚麼，創作動機都是希望透過作路品去表達一些意思，只是大家的手法不同。期後「偉人」不停強調畢業展如何向學校討贊助，如何讓多些client去看他的作品，給他commission……

今年的project是關於自然氣候、人和愛，看了一些有關氣候變化的書和參加了一個有關氣候問題的工作坊。「地球叔叔生病了」，我們都知道，亦知道要一起面對……我不是「偉人」要去改變大家的行為思想。每個人來自不同背景，不同的國家歷史、生活模式，對每件事，無論跟藝術有關與否，都會因價值觀不同而作出不同反應。就像KaKa甜品許願卡出現在車仔麪店一樣，許願卡的用途不同了。

很感激自己有多次出國旅行／生活的機會，去了解不同國家文化。因為香港曾經是殖民地，我這年代的香港人沒有濃厚的國家主義。我們不會像瑞典國王生日，到廣場揮動國旗，排隊為國王獻花慶祝。自己曾經羨慕外國有這樣的情景，曾經感歎自己的城市沒有。

跟英國朋友外出，我們會各自準備午餐。他們的民族主義很強，他會不悄我手上起源於美國的麪包，說那些是來自法國的，那些是中國的……他們認為香腸放在冷的酥餅中是美味的傳統英國食物。嘲笑中國的五行思想、把弄我不適應英國天氣而變得乾燥的手和頭髮。我唯有向他介紹當地的收費公厠、不便利的交通系統和散慢的工作態度亦是他們的傳統文化。不過我確信每個城市都有值得欣賞的人和事。我們會尋找合適自己生活的地方，像季候鳥。

我們不能改變城市和大家的思想，但我們可以靈活地將眼前的事物重新思考，去配合自己的生活環境，賦與另一種意義，成為合自己口味的「三餸車仔麪」，多變和融洽，這是我我城市背景文化。祝聖誕快樂。

I sudden came up with an idea of making a doll,

and hope it will travel with me and I will be inspired on my story writing.

Ran to supermarkets and bought needle and thread,

and used my Aunt's kitchen cloth to make the doll in the midnight.

The nose is too large when compared with the drawing,

anyway I'm still working on the character design...not finalized.

I was happy that a story idea came out when I was sewing the doll.

I'll take picture of this doll if there is lightsource/sunlight

for project research. I will need your help soon! :)

It is my 1st time to make monoprint.

It'd be described as 'copy paper', scratch on the paper on top,

the ink below will go to the paper underneath, to create patterns/lines.

Ma Shi Po Life Objects Exhibition

This is an exhibition we organized in Fanling Ma Shi Po Village in Hong Kong. The exhibition shows a large number of villagers' bowls, as well as artists' works (include my work) corresponded to the bowl. There are also ceramics bowls made with soil in this village, by a group of young people who visited this village. The exhibition started and will end on 18Dec2011. Sister gave me a picture from SaSa (a 4 year-old girl). Jackie asked her why there are black clouds on the flower. SaSa replied that if no cloud, no rain. No rain, the flower can't grow. It is sensible...right? I hope the flower will look beautiful after rain. God bless :)
